UK Food Hygiene Ratings Directory

A food hygiene rating is the score (0 to 5) that a local authority gives a restaurant, takeaway, cafe or food shop after inspecting how safely it handles food. This directory covers 607,906 establishments across 360 local authorities and 238 areas, using official Food Standards Agency (FSA) data (as of 2026-06-12).

Quick answer

Food hygiene ratings run from 5 (Very Good) down to 0 (Urgent Improvement Necessary). They are issued by local authority food safety officers, not by GeraEats. Pick a local authority below to see its rating distribution, its highest-rated places and which areas need improvement. All figures come directly from the FSA.

What the ratings mean

  • 5 — Very Good: hygiene standards are very good.
  • 4 — Good and 3 — Generally Satisfactory: broadly compliant.
  • 2 — Improvement Necessary and 1 — Major Improvement Necessary: some or major improvement required.
  • 0 — Urgent Improvement Necessary: urgent improvement is required.

Scotland is different. Scottish councils use the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) — a pass/fail scheme rather than the 0–5 scale. Businesses receive a Pass or Improvement Required (with an optional Eat Safe award for exceeding the basics), so Scottish authority pages show pass rates instead of star ratings.

Methodology

Establishments and ratings are taken directly from the Food Standards Agency Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. We group them by local authority and postcode area, and publish a directory page for any authority with at least 200 establishments on record and any area with at least 30 — to avoid thin or misleading pages. Rated percentages exclude premises that are awaiting inspection or exempt. Data as of 2026-06-12.
